* Navigation tools that make sense. What do I mean by ??make sense??? Have you ever visited a site where the buttons are icons that do not indicate what they stand for (even when you roll over them). Or maybe it is a Flash opening page with no clue about the site or how to enter. If your visitor has a huge amount of time and a curious streak, he or she may investigate, but most visitors will leave with a speedy click.
* Navigation bars that are easy to find and follow. There are many ways to navigate web sites, but there are standard locations for navigation bars that most visitors to your site will check out first. The obvious are across the top and down the left side of the page. By using rollovers and/or fly-out (popup) menus you can provide links to a large number of pages. Note: When planning navigation, you should devise ways that cut down on the number of clicks the visitor needs to make to get where he or she wants to go (three are considered the maximum).
* Complete contact information. Even though you may have a separate page called ??Contact Us?? I feel that having your name, address, phone number and e-mail on every page makes it easy for your visitor to get in touch. It also gives you credibility (you are not hiding where you are located and your phone number).
* Navigation links across the bottom of the page. Another way to facilitate navigation is to have the major links repeated at the bottom of the page, including the link to ??Home?? To avoid large graphic files that result in long download times:

* Prepare images that are reasonably sized (I try to never go beyond 300 pixels in width or height). What if you have a group of stunning photographs from a recent trip, and know that friends and family would like to see the larger photo? Make thumbnails of each, and then post each large, separate photo on its own page, so that if someone wants to view it, they can click on the thumbnail.
* Size and compress your graphics before placing them on the website. Many of the web authoring programs (and even HTML) will allow you to resize an image once it is placed on the web page. It will appear in the browser to be the smaller size, but when it is downloaded, it is still the original, large size and then is resized by the code (thus slowing down the download).
* Specify the actual dimensions of the HEIGHT and WIDTH parameters. Do this for all graphics on the website (even if they are the navigation buttons).
* Avoid background images. Adding a background image can also slow the downloading, and, in most cases (my opinion), detracts from the overall look of the site, making the type difficult to read.
* Use the same graphics over again. Once a graphic is downloaded, it is stored in the visitor??s cache. 5. Your empty promises are lost on the skeptical consumer. Think about your own web-surfing experiences. Did you believe that guy who told you he'd make you a millionaire if you just SIGN UP TODAY? You're better off being honest and optimistic, than crazed and fanatical about what you can offer your customer.

6. Pop-ups are really annoying. Have you ever been so intrigued by a pop-up ad that you bought whatever they were raving about? My guess is no. Do you appreciate it when you're trying to get some work done on the computer and fifteen pop-up ads crowd your screen and overload your hard drive? I certainly don't! If you don't like such rude interruptions, then don't impose them on somebody else. I don't care how many times that marketing guru tells you it will improve your search engine ranking. Search engine stats might give you exposure, but click rates mean nothing if the customer's not buying.

7. No one reads really long sales letters. Ah, how brilliant of those copywriting experts to convince you that a six-page letter is going to bring in big bucks for your company. Especially if you're paying them by the hour or word! A two-page letter will do the same thing as a six-pager, and more. The 'more' being that it will hold your reader's interest the whole way through. Brevity is the key to great writing. If you can make a great argument in five words or less, you've got it all over the next guy. Keep that in mind before you put the Magna Carta on your web portal.

Want to design and write website content that attracts and captivates? Want to bring your visitors back for seconds, thirds, fourths, and the ultimate purchase? Then keep the above "distractors" to a minimum. Really try to put yourself in the other person's shoes... the one who is searching the internet for what you have. Think about all of those things that prevent you from enjoying your web surfing experience, and then take care to remove them from your own company website! Offer tasteful, subtle design, eloquent headlines, and clear, informative copy. Be honest about what you sell and how it can make a difference for your potential customer. Speak softly, and watch the sales roll in.

Most new e-business owners realize they need a website that looks professional. But how elaborate do you need to be? How much energy, creativity and money should you invest so that visitors gasp, ??Wow ?? what a beautiful website???

Experienced business owners know: Your goal is to create a website that sells, not a site that wins the electronic version of Miss Universe. Most of the time you??ll want to win sales contests ?? not beauty contests.

Remember the commercial about the beer and the dog? A man sends his dog into the kitchen to get him a beer. We hear sounds of a refrigerator opening and a can opener humming...and then we hear lapping sounds. Oh no! The dog is drinking the beer!

Great commercial, right? Except ... can you remember the brand of beer?

And of course we??ve all seen that big pink battery-powered rabbit. But many viewers can??t remember the sponsor??s brand.

(1) Emphasize your marketing message.

Recently I heard a speaking professional say, ??My speaking wardrobe is designed to avoid calling attention to me. When the audience is thinking, ??What a beautiful suit!?? or ??What a mess!?? they??re not listening to my message.??

Your website works the same way. Stay focused on the content.

(2) Use graphics sparingly.

Graphics take awhile to load. And what sells your product? Not graphics ?? copy.

Research shows visitors seek information. So use graphics to convey specific messages. A fitness site could show a before-and-after. And real estate sites can show examples of real houses.

(3) Use meaningful graphics.

One award-winning site featured a menu on an elaborately drawn 3-ring notebook. The words were hard to read and frankly I??m not sure I remember what the site was all about. A 3-ring binder could be a calendar, a student notebook, or ...

But let??s say you want to target a business audience. You??d show pinstripes and briefcases. Sure, your target market wears business casual and carries canvas. But they??ll pick up the symbolism, especially if you??re trying to differentiate yourself from a leisure or family market.

(4) Skip flash and frames (usually).

You probably know this already. Search engines don??t like frames and your visitors will get impatient waiting for flash to load.

If you??re a famous musician (like Coldplay) or author (like Lawrence Block) you can create an elaborate site and your fans will wait half an hour, if need be. They??ll expect something out of the ordinary.

And if you??re a web designer, you probably need to showcase some of your tricks.

But most of the time, I believe websites are like basketball games. Web copy is out on the court, putting points on the board. Readers look for smooth moves and sharp uniforms but they??re mostly paying attention to the action.

Graphics remain on the side, cheering the team. But let??s face it: most of us don??t come to a game to watch the pep squad.

(5) Create a great headline for each page.

Research shows, over and over, that readers respond first to your headline. If they??re intrigued, they??ll go on to read your copy.

Readers look first for headlines that communicate, ??I share your pain!?? They??ve got problems and they??re surfing for solutions. And they don??t have much time.

Bottom line: Focus on creating and communicating a great marketing message. Frame your message so you come across as professional ?? but keep your website focused on learning how you can provide solutions to their challenges.

Your Website Strategy Should Be Based on Two Questions

Most website communications strategies can be based on the answers to two questions:

Who is Using the Internet?

According to www.worldinternetstats.com 68% of North Americans are using the Internet (we will focus on North America because we are an English language company). Of these users, 89% of people with an annual household income of more than $75,000 are online and 88% of people with a college education are online. 78% of people aged 18 to 29 are online and 74% of people aged 30 to 49 are online. Users are more or less evenly split between rural and urban and male and female.

These demographics indicate that most sites should use language that appeals to younger and well educated audiences, who probably don??t have a lot of time on their hands. But don't make the language too complex. The reason is in the next section.

How Are They Using the Internet?

According to an article by TJ and Sandar Larkin in ??Communications World??, the publication of the International Association of Business Communicators, the strength of website based communication is the ability to search for and retrieve specific facts and information. The weakness is a low level of comprehension. Information that requires a higher degree of comprehension should be printed on paper. This is because the website user is thinking about where to go next and not about what they are reading.

So it follows that key points should be readily identifiable, key information should be in point form with links to longer documents and that documents that require some comprehension should be available for printing.

This article explores the importance of design in the Internet world. A recent blog post on Signal vs Noise pointed out the article at Reuters which said that a website has around 1/20th of a second to make an impression that will stay with the user for the rest of their visit and all other visits.

You should take this on board. What impression does your website make on people? Have you ever asked your clients/customers what they think of your site? What was their first impressions of the site and why? Great content, functionality and added value are all huge aspects of Internet Development, but your site design can and will turn people away within a second or less. You need to address this issue.

2. The Business implications

The real business issue you need to consider here is your reputation. Your website is just like your receptionist: it can be the first thing that a client or user sees of your company. Can you afford to make a bad impression. Bad design is like having a rude receptionist.

You can lose customers and clients by having a badly designed website. That's the business issue.

3. How can you change it

So the next question is, how?

After having read this article it got me thinking about how you can solve this problem, anything people can do to make their first impression count.

Gitte Lindgaard, a psychology professor at Carleton University in Ottawa said:

"When we looked at the Web sites that we tested, there is really nothing there that tells us what leads to dislike or to like."

So, there are no principles that we can put here that can quickly change your sites design to make a better impression. The only advice I can give is to hire a professional design agency. Whilst this is still no guarantee of a design that makes a great impression, it is what they are hired to do: they are the experts.

However there are some basic principles of design though that aid a good site design (though as we already know, they don't MAKE a great design):

* No unnecessary animated GIFs like 'under construction' logos for pages

* No blinking text

* No background music

* No clashing colours or text on colours where the constrast that results is so bad that the text is unreadable.

* Use of appropriate, readable fonts. For instance Arial or Verdana. Text should not be too small or too big. Adjustable text.

* Generally the use of a page background is discouraged unless it's very subtle or aids the content. A bad example would be here.

* Different pages have different design: use consistent design.

I could go on and on and on I'm sure. There are many bad examples of websites on the net and you don't have to look too hard to find them. However your site does not have to be one of them.

If you're going to do it, do it properly.

Your Website Visitors - Will They Stay?

I'm sure you've all heard the saying 'Build it and they will come'. Although that may have been true a few years ago, now we must work, and work hard, to get visitors to our websites.

You can't always control who visits, however, you can have some control over who stays.

Here are a few website no-no's that I have come accross that made me leave without even clicking past the first page.

1. Slow loading pages - For those of us still on dial-up internet access this is one of the primary reasons for not hanging around.

If you think you are going to load your page up with lots of images and javascripts to make it look nice and do great things, think again. They slow down the loading of the page. Save that stuff for later pages when you have your visitors' attention. If you offer them something they came to find they will have a little more patience as the remaining pages load.

2. Curser followers - We've all seen them, those little dots or letters that follow the curser around the page. They are so annoying that I don't even bother to read the first paragraph.

OK, so maybe there is a place for them. If you have a site based on entertaining children then perhaps you can use them effectively. However, if your site is focused on getting signups for your affiliate programs try to keep it professional looking.

3. Flash Intro - These are not as bad as they used to be due to the fact that most search engines can spider and index them now.

What is annoying though is when a site has a flash intro and does not give the visitor a way to skip it and go directly into the site. Again this is particularly bad for those with dial-up connections. If I have to sit and watch a little colored bar that says 'loading', guess what, I'm gone. Always give your visitor a means to skip the intro if they want to.

4. Colored backgrounds and printing - Have you ever had to get up close to your monitor to read the words on a website? I have and I can tell you that I didn't read too many lines before I was gone.

There are definitely some color schemes you should stay away from. For example, red letters on a black background are extremely hard to read. I'm sure you have come accross some yourself that were sure-fire triggers for the 'back' button.

Simple black letters on a white background is your best bet for easy reading. Also be sure to keep your paragraphs short and have lots of 'white space' on your page.

I'm not saying not to use colors in your site, there have been many studies that indicate certain colors trigger certain responses, however, you really need to experiment to get the right combination.

5. Animated Banners - DO NOT put animated banners on your home page.

Banners, animated or not, are images and can slow down the loading of your page. Also, animated banners are distracting and if you distract your visitor from the main purpose of your site......there goes a possible sale.

I know that many people just starting out are using Banner Exchanges as a means of getting visitors to their site. That's OK just don't put them on your home page. Put them at the bottom of all the rest of the pages if you want, just not on your index page. Remember, if your home page is strong enough to capture your visitors' interest, they will click on more pages and you will get your banner impressions.

6. Too much on one page - I've seen some sites where the owner has just about every affiliate program he belongs to on his home page.

If I type a keyword into a search engine and click on the first site that comes up, I want to be able to find what I'm looking for without having to sift through paragraph upon paragraph of other advertisements and affiliate links. If your visitors don't think they will find what they came to find, you'll lose them.

You should use your home page to welcome your visitors and tell them exactly what they want to know. If your site is about pet grooming, tell them that right from the start. Let them know the kind of information they can expect to find on each of your pages. Make sure your navigation is easy to follow by having the main navigation bar at the top left of your page and putting links throughout the text.

Your home page should lead your visitors to the rest of your site, that's where you do your selling.

Those are a few of the deterants that I have found while searching for information on the internet. I hope you will be able to use this information to make your own sites more user friendly and keep your visitors from clicking away.

Importance of Audience Analysis

As I mentioned in an earlier article, audience analysis must be your first and formost objective if you want to have a successful website. Unless you know who is visiting your website your efforts will be less successful than if the site is focused on a particular audience. If the webmaster is to be successful in producing an effective website he/she must proceed systematically.

Analyzing the Audience

The webmaster should analyze his prospective audience in light of the message he is attempting to convey. You must be concerned with the range of ages represented in your visitors, the education and experience of this audience and their knowledge and opinions on your main theme.

You must adapt your website as specifically as possible to the audience that you are trying to reach. You will need more than a superficial knowledge of your target audience. What are their interests, are they educated or uneducated, are they experienced or inexperienced, what are their opinions and prejudices and what is their economic and social level.

The webmaster should never fail to consider the emotional state of his audience. Establish a common ground of feeling. You must analyze and utilize their motives and interests if you are to relate what you have to say to their habits of thought and feeling. To do this you must know as much as possible about the behavior and needs of the people who will be visiting your website.

Often, the subject of your website will give you a hint as to the character of your visitors. If they are interested enough to visit your website then you can expect that they have an interest in what you have to offer. Understand your audience in terms of the trends of the day as revealed through newspapers, magazines, broadcasts, the movies and web surfing. Compare the customs, standards, traditions and manners that you possess with that of your target audience and create a common ground with them.

Define and Refine

There are 4 steps, that if followed, will define your target audience and refine your site to meet their interests. They are;

1) Investigation - Consider the purpose of the website, the layout that best projects the idea that you wish to convey and characteristics of your prospective audience. List possible topics and select the one best suited to all aspects of the situation: your interests and qualifications, the requirements necessary to promote your ideas, the necessary content to accomplish this and the expectations and characteristics of the audience.

2) Organization - The next step for the webmaster is to determine the structure of the website. The webmaster must decide the logical requirements of the subject matter and the most appropriate way to adapt it to the prospective audience. Only after a webmaster has selected the topic, has analyzed the particular audience, and has collected the proper content will they be equipped to plan the structure of the website.

3) Method of Expression - The third step in building an audience friendly website is to express the thought in a way that will communicate to your audience exactly what you intend. The central theme should be easy to follow, the vocabulary must be suited to the understanding of the audience and be interesting enough to hold the attention of your visitors.

4) Mastery of the Content - You must master the content of your website and present a logical sequence of ideas leading to a particular goal. Set up your website in such a way that there is a smooth progression from one idea to another. Make clear the exact meaning of what you are saying each step of the way.

?? Animated Flash Button & Macromedia Dream weaver:

Dream weaver lets you create some custom vector graphics from within the software. You can make Flash and embed them into your Web pages. There are different kinds of style that you can choose for these from the available set-play back type of buttons .Arrow shaped button, shopping cart button And so on, or make some of your own.

Making a smart interactive button is simple in Dream weaver, select insert-interactive Image-Flash Button. Form the window that opens select different button style by looking at the preview image below. Customize the button the way you want it by adding the name of the button, the Font color and font size , then specify the URL that the button has to link to . The button is saved with SWF extension you can preview the button in your browser to see if it looks the way you want.

?? Easy Mouse-Over Buttons :

Mouse-over and Front Page? Oh Yes. The software has quit a few convenient features up its sleeve, one of which is ??Hover buttons.?? Granted, these buttons don??t have snazzy graphics they look like typical button blocks, but they react to mouse-over and you can archive it very simply. Here??s how.

Select Insert ??Web component. in the window that opens , select Dynamic Effect in the component type and select the Hover Button effect on the right . Type in the text that should appear on the button, choose a font for the text, specify the URL to link to on clicking, and select the size and color of the button. In the drop-down menu for Effect, Glow is the default selection. Try it ?? you can select the color of the glow-check the button in preview mode-the button light up when you move your mouse over it. There are several other effects available that are worth checking out, especially the bevels quite neat!

?? Cool Effects With DHTML :

DHTML or Dynamic HTML offers some cool effects that could make your Web pages stand out click? Or your page to load with a transition Effect? DHTML will do this for you along with other little tricks. After you??ve built your Web page, from the menu bar, select Format-Dynamic HTML Effect. A tool bar appears in the work area. Choose an event from the first drop down list. This could be on ??click?? double-click.?? Mouse over or page load. Depending on the event selected here, the next Drop-Down list offers the possible effect that can be achieved , This could be a change in the color and style of the font if it is text, a border added around it , or in case of an image , you can replace the image with another one by a swap .

Most of the effect toggle Meaning if there was a font change on click, another click will change the font back to what it was before. However, some effects are one-time like the disappearing act of an image or button .you select ??fly out?? from the effects list for this . On ??page load?? you could have the selected text drop in word by word, or hop in, spiral in, zoom out, and so on. This is especially useful for advertisements or parts of the page that you want to draw the user??s attention to.

?? Animation In Reverse :

You??ve made an animation using image Ready-may be a tween of position, opacity or effects or a manually placed and manipulated animation backwards? No need to re-tween or manually place the frames backwards; simply click on the little arrow in the animated palette and select Reverse Frames. You can also create a rubber band effect by copying the forward sequence (small arrow > copy Frames), pasting it at the end of sequence (small arrow > Paste Frames > ??Paste after selection ??) and then, by selecting the newly pasted sequence and applying Reverse Frames on this.

?? All It Takes Is A Droplet :

Want to optimize several images with the same settings? Create a ??droplet ??and save time.

Open the optimize palette in Image Ready with your image open. Set the optimization to what you want-file type (JPG, GIF or PNG), quality (low, medium, high), lousiness, dither and so on while previewing the result in the ??optimized?? tab of the main in the Optimize palette. This creates what is called a ??droplet?? that contains your optimization settings. Save this droplet anywhere you want, say on your desktop.

Now drag the folder containing the images to be optimized onto this droplet. All the images in the folder will get optimized the way you specified. This may take a while depending on the number and size of the images in the folder. You can also drop images one at a time onto the droplet.

?? Precise Hot Spots :

Want to link different parts of an image to various URLs? You can do this by slicing the image and assigning links to the relevant slices, but the disadvantage of this is the lack of precision: slice is necessarily rectangular. Also, slices are pieces of the image.

Say you??re working on a Web page for children about the different parts of ancient castles. You would like the parts-dungeons; moat, guard towers, and so on-to have precise rollovers and links so that the information is conveyed correctly. Rather than slices such an images and allot links, use image maps, select the polygon Image Map tool in Image Ready and outline the part you want to talk about precisely . Even circular image maps work fairly well in some areas. You can adjust points of the map edge after finishing the shape, too .in the image map palette, you can specify the URL to link to along with ALT text. To preview your work, save Optimized as a HTML file and check it in a browser.

?? Optimize Your Web Graphics Easily :

Despite the cable Internet connections and high-speed modems, Web graphics are still limited speed-wise. The sites that load fastest and work most efficient have well-optimized graphics .GIF images are generally good for line drawings and illustrations while JPG ones are best suited for photographs. Besides file format, there are various factor that affect the optimized image like the ??lousiness??-the amount of data in the image that you??re willing to sacrifice for smaller file size-the number of colors you need minimum, whether you can have dithering or not, so on .

In Photoshop, to try out different optimization settings, click Save for Web . A window opens up showing the current image along with various options and menus on the right . in the image window itself, you can see two tabs: 2-up tab to see two versions-the original and the optimized-for comparison along with time needed to load the image according to various modem speeds . The 4-upshows you 3 versions against the original. These previews are useful and convenient, rather than having to manually save the image repeatedly in different ways and comparing each of them.

?? Making A Banner Ad:

We??re all familiar with banner ads that we see all over the Web: a strip with an image and text that changes into another and another conveying some information. Clicking on this ad takes you to the site that the company is advertising for. You don??t have to use GIF Builder or any other graphics software to animate such an ad. You can make it easily using Front Page. Select Insert-Web component-banner ad manger. In the window that opens, specify the size of the ad, the transition effect, the number of seconds to display each image, the URL to link the ad to and add the images you??ve prepared. That??s it.

This feature could also be used you want to share a few photographs coiled also be used when you want to share a few photographs or images but don??t want the images to be save-able on the cline??s side; right-click will not work on these images. Although the images may be found in the cache, at least they won??t be able to be copied directly.

The basics that you need to know about putting together a website are keep it simple, keep it relevant, and keep it accessible.

Keep It Simple

Keep it simple is one of the most overused clich???s in the business world but, in this case, it is an absolutely necessary clich???. By telling you to keep your website simple I am in no way advocating that you make it dull, uninteresting, and boring. Not at all, in fact, I am saying quite the opposite. If a website is too cluttered with visuals it will not be easy to navigate. If a person cannot find what it is they are looking for than they will not come back to your site, even if what they need is on your site. Make sure that your design has a specific focus. There should be a homepage that easily directs people to the specific section of your site that they need to get to. The last time I was exposed to the information I read that the average attention span of Americans is slightly less than two minutes. It becomes even shorter when they are browsing the Internet because there is so much to look at. If they cannot find what they want on your site immediately, there are hundreds of other places they can look. Also, don??t put a lot of Flash stuff on your site; the extra time it takes up will make viewers impatient.

Keep It Relevant

It is amazing the number of websites that are dedicated to one subject but then just throw all kinds of other stuff in there. If someone is looking to buy quilts they don??t really want to have to wade through vacation pictures to get to the quilt page. Also, if someone is looking for a specific topic, subject, or item and they see something else when they get to your homepage, they won??t stick around long enough to realize that they are at the right spot. They will leave and find another site to browse. That ties in with the simplicity of your site as well. Irrelevant material makes a website complicated. Even things like random ??jokes of the day?? or comic strips, while funny I??m sure, will drive more people away than bring them in.

Keep It Accessible

There are two things to consider when dealing with accessibility issues, outside accessibility and inside accessibility. These two, if mastered, will drive people to your site and keep them coming back over and over. These two, if disregarded, will leave you with a nice, clean, unused site that does nothing more than take up cyberspace.

Outside Accessibility

In order for people to get to your site they have to be able to find it. Sure, you can hand out business cards and email the URL to all your friends, but that is not where the majority of your traffic comes from. You have to make sure that your site can be found by searching the major search engines. In order to do this, you have to have content that will register hits when web browsers perform a search. For instance, if you are selling woven baskets you, obviously, want to make sure that your site mentions, in a readable way, that you are selling woven baskets. You would also want to make sure that your site mentions that you are selling crafts as there are people who would be interested in buying your baskets but would search for ??crafts for sale??. These are called keywords and you want to make sure that you have enough of them to register when a search is performed.

Inside Accessibility

This merely ties back in with keeping it simple. If someone goes to your site where you sell all different kinds of arts and crafts, but they are only interested in buying Popsicle stick bird feeders, you need to have an easy way for them to find what they are looking for. Otherwise, they will just go somewhere else. It is always a good idea to have a search option for within your site to accommodate easy browsing.
